I am a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist in private practice in San Diego, CA. I have been practicing psychotherapy for over twenty years now. For over ten years I have worked in a private practice setting. I have worked with children, adolescents, adults, couples families and groups. In addition I am a teacher trainer for Mindful Self-Compassion and co-founder, along with Drs. Germer, Neff and Hickman, of the Mindful Self-Compassion Teacher Training.
Specializing in mindfulness and compassion based approaches, I am also a Certified Daring Way™ Facilitator (CDWF) and Certified Teacher of Compassion Cultivation Training developed by CCARE at Stanford University. I enjoy helping people find a meaningful and satisfying way of life.
I chose to be licensed as a Marriage and Family Therapist because it is the license that specializes in relationships. Relationships are at the heart of my work. My work involves looking at the ways in which we relate to the difficulties that arise in our lives and it also involves looking at the way we relate to ourselves and others. Painful things happen in every life. How we meet these things can mean the difference between resilience and real suffering. Learning to pause, see clearly and then respond rather than react in our old habitual ways puts us on a better path.
Similarly in our relationships it is normal for difficulties to arise and it is the way we meet them that helps us to feel safe, supported and connected rather than cutoff, angry and isolated. I work with individuals and couples to help them learn to relate in ways that help cultivate safe and caring connections. Did you know there are ways to listen and talk that take us from arguing to repairing?
The way we relate to ourselves is also very important. If we are human and alive we will inevitably fall short sometimes. Criticizing and blaming ourselves only makes things worse. Learning to meet ourselves with kindness and compassion enables us to make the changes we need to make in order to become the people we want to be.
Currently I spend most of my time teaching classes and teaching and mentoring teachers.
